Enrollment at American colleges is sliding, but competition for spots at top universities is more cutthroat and anxiety-inducing than ever. This year, for example, Stanford University accepted only 5 percent of applicants—it turned away 95% of students, most of whom had the same credentials as those lucky enough to be admitted!!! One of the reasons is due to that fact that students are applying to more colleges than ever (the average of 3 a decade ago is now 7 or more). Another reason? Elite colleges are ranked in part by the number of applicants so many of these universities “solicit” high-ranking students simply to increase their applicant pool and manipulate the numbers.
